Purpose Overview:

The World Languages Curriculum Remodeling Session will highlight professional development resources and instructional materials for standards implementation, with an emphasis on exploring assessment and building local capacity. Information will be shared about state policies, national and international initiatives, and various projects that support the North Carolina World Language Essential Standards.

Description:

This 90-minute session will be offered twice on Day 1 at the 2013 Summer Institute 2013 sites. Please see the agenda below for details on topics, activities and timeframes.

Objectives:
The main objectives of the World Language Curriculum Remodeling Session are to:
  • Access the needed professional development resources and materials on the World Language wiki.
  • Describe World Language assessment tools and options.
  • Update current plan to build local capacity as teachers continue to implement the North Carolina World Language Essential Standards.

Learner Outcomes:

By the end of the World Language Curriculum Remodeling Session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe World Language assessment tools and options.
  • Update current plan to build local capacity as teachers continue to implement the North Carolina World Language Essential Standards.

  • Take the Wiki Tour Overview so that you become familiar with how the wiki is organized.
  • Explore the professional development resources on the wiki, including tabs that have resources organized by goal to help you develop local training to:
    • Establish a working knowledge of the World Language Essential Standards (WL),
    • Understand the 8 proficiency levels of the WLES,
    • Know how to teach to build proficiency, and
    • Know how to assess proficiency, formatively and summatively, in the classroom.
  • Update your district/charter portion of the Building Capacity section (http://wlnces.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/Local+Capacity) of the World Language Wiki to share the types of programs and courses you have in each language.

As you do the Pre-Work, please complete and submit the Google Form at http://bit.ly/WLWikiResources for further use during Summer Institutes 2013.
