Pre-Work Assignment for School Counseling and Guidance Session

  • NC Professional Standards for School Counselors
  • NC Guidance Essential Standards
  • School Counselor's role in Connecting to Serve All Learners.

This review will assure that all participants are knowledgeable of the standards for school counselors that was presented in the 2012 Summer Institute as well as the 2012 Fall and 2013 Spring RESA trainings that occurred across the state.

Description of this 90 Minute Session

The School Counseling/Guidance Remodeling Session will feature a "deep dive" into the School Counseling Evaluation Rubric by reviewing the content of each Standard and Element of this rubric. In addition, we will feature the School Counseling Wikispace and School Counseling LiveBinder (http://schoolcounseling.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/School+Counseling ) showing where professional development resources and materials are located, with an emphasis on continuing to build local capacity. Information will be shared about state policies, national and international initiatives, and various projects that support the North Carolina Professional School Counseling Standards and the Guidance Essential Standards.

Purpose and Overview:

The purpose of this session is to provide professional development to LEAs with the implementation of the new School Counselor Evaluation Rubric. The American School Counselor Association and Achieve have developed resources that may be used to plan and execute a data-driven comprehensive school counseling program which supports Common Core State Standards and the NC Essential Standards.
Information will be shared to include the following:
  • NC Professional School Counseling Standards which are directly aligned to the new School Counselor Evaluation Rubric.
  • Use of resources found in EVAAS, Home Base, the School Counseling Wikispace (http://schoolcounseling.ncdpi.wikispaces.net) and NCDPI Live Binder showing where professional development resources and materials are located
  • Regional Professional Learning Networks to build local capacity of support
  • Information will be shared about state policies, national initiatives and various projects that support school counseling practices and the North Carolina Guidance Essential Standards.

Objectives

  • Understand how to access and use the School Counseling Wiki Space and LiveBinder to continue to build resources and develop local capacity.
  • Continue focus on the implementation of the NC Guidance Essential Standards
  • Continue support to implement the NC Professional School Counseling Standards to meet the criteria of the new School Counselor Evaluation Rubric
  • Further the development of a state-wide professional network for standards implementation and support

Learner Outcomes

  • I can access and use the NCDPI School Counseling Wiki space to access and share resources
  • I can describe ways to evaluate School Counselors that align with the NC Professional Standards for School Counseling and meet the criteria of the School Counselor Evaluation Rubric
  • I can identify appropriate data sources for school counselors to use to implement a data-driven comprehensive school counseling program
  • I can describe the resources and tools of the ASCA National Model will assist school counselors as they implement a comprehensive school counseling program that supports student achievement.
  • I can identify personal and professional resources as part of a state-wide network for standards implementation and support
