Purpose and Overview

The purpose of the Arts Education Remodeling Session is to provide continued arts-specific professional development for full implementation of the North Carolina Arts Education Essential Standards, with special focus on developing artistically literate students and building local capacity.

Description (90-minute session):

The Arts Education Curriculum Remodeling Session will highlight professional development resources and instructional materials for standards implementation, with an emphasis on the development of Artistic Literacy and building local capacity. Information will be shared about state and national policy, legislation, initiatives, and various projects that support the implementation of the North Carolina Arts Education Essential Standards.

Objectives

  • Understand how to access and use the Arts Education Wiki Space to continue to build resources and develop local capacity.
  • Continue focus on the development and assessment of Artistic Literacy/Proficiency
  • Understand shared responsibilities and support for the CCSS in ELA/Literacy and Mathematics in relationship to Artistic Literacy
  • Further the development of a state-wide professional network for standards implementation and support

Learner Outcomes

(Participants can complete the following by the end of the institute)
  • I can access and use the Arts Education Wiki space to access and share resources
  • I can define Artistic Literacy and Proficiency in arts education
  • I can describe ways to develop and assess Artistic Literacy/Proficiency
  • I can explain shared responsibilities for the Common Core State Standards in relationship to Artistic Literacy
  • I can identify personal and professional resources as part of a state-wide network for standards implementation and support


Pre-Work Assignment for Arts Education

  1. Visit the NCDPI Arts Education Wiki: http://ances.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/
  2. Explore the General Arts Education resourcesfor at least one of the following categories:
    • Student Placement Resources
    • Proficiency and Evidence of Growth in the Arts
    • Arts and the Common Core
  3. Select at least one resource that you have used or developed at the local level related to one or more of these categories to share at Summer Institute.

Building Local Capacity

Please click on the appropriate links to access presentation materials, templates, and other resources that may be used or adapted for assistance with implementation of the standards. Stakeholders are encouraged to access and adapt these materials for local standards implementation.

Considerations while planning

Please make sure to include the following in content presentation:
  • Understand the impact of Home Base (to consider: ArtsFolio, Teacher Evaluation, resources, arts educators' access to student data) on the implementation of the Arts Education Essential Standards
  • Understand how to access and continue to build resources and instructional tools to support local implementation and support for the Arts Education Essential Standards (Building Local Capacity - placement resources, CCSS resources, proficiency/growth resources, etc.)
  • Dufour (PLCs) - need to determine how to weave into session - introductory materials/framing
  • Guskey (PD) - same as above
  • UDL - can model through presentation design (?)
  • Reflection (provided by Facilitated Team Time group)
